The slow starting bus

So the prompt this week (from Chiccoreal) is about first thing in the morning. And what do I do first thing most mornings..? It goes a bit like this...

The first thing to do is dream

Waking from a night of slumber
I groan and sigh and twist and then
I keep myself full down and under
And go straight back to sleep again

RF 2010

Next comes a cup of tea (and see here for tea poetry).

I've never been a morning person... even as a young kid I'd always rather stay up late and then sleep in... and there's no sign of that changing really. I say to Mark that I've a big brain so it takes a long time to get it running... but this is, most definitely, only a joke. This allergy to early morning activity has affected lots of things in my life (one reason I ended up being a nightclub DJ back in the '90s for a start) and really the only time I wake up early is when something extreme is happening (I've just had a baby or someone's ill or dying something) and even then I can't keep it up for too long (I can however pretty much always win a 'who can stay awake at night the longest' competition... this has got me into trouble in the past...). You'll have to excuse that long sentence - it's early yet.

Although I seem to be more creative first thing in the morning, that seems to occur while sitting in a bathtub with noting to write on. :)

I suppose it's the peace and quiet of a household not yet moving. And yet, I don't really LIKE getting up early.

I do, however, like your poem. More sleep is what I'd prefer as well.

I am afraid we are both larks - up at 6.30 and in bed by ten. Can't imagine staying up after midnight, I think I would turn into a pumpkin or something.

Not so peaceful here in the morning Hope (the other two get up quite early). I get my peace just after lunch or late at night.

And Weaver, I would be the worst farmer's wife on record!

brilliant, it's just exactly the same as what I do, I'll even set my alarm to ensure I have roll over time. now what'll I write?!

Love the poem! The only thing that propels me out of bed in the morning is my bladder. In fact, and I am NOT kidding, this morning as I lay in bed fighting the need to get up I pondered the possibility of adult diapers - just on the weekends. Weekdays I have to be up by 6:30 anyway so I might as well use my built-in alarm clock.

Economic,short but sweet.

And I challenge you to a staying up contest!

Niamh - don't know
Bug - no, no, no...the time for them will come anyway, don't worry.
TFE - OK - no drink, no drugs, just natural staying-up power!

No drink? Doh! You win.

I don't mind what time I wake so long as there's no artificial mechanisms involved - HATE alarm clocks!

I thought it was going to be hard to better Captain Sensible's, but you have.
I am so with you on the night thing - I seriously believe my brain only starts to operate after midnight. I can, and have to, do early starts, but take Anadin Extra every time. Not because I have a headache, but just to wake me up. Don't like coffee in the morning, see. I am also a big fan of the afternoon nap.

I understand about the big brain taking a long time to boot up. The results are obviously worth waiting for, though as evidenced by the poetry.

Well, it might be that, Dave, or it might be that I'm just a lazy cow.

Hello everyone else!

I like the way you rhyme "then" with "again" Is that just in North of England accents (like mine) or is it UK universal?

Rachel Fox said...

Oh no, now I'll have to sit and try it with every accent...mine is a Northern English one too so it works for me! I guess it won't work for cockneys for a start...

Coming in on the tail end of a query, 'then and 'again' rhyme in my book, and I live on the South Coast - but once I'm awake, that's it!

South Coast of...England?

Since I'm here on the east coast of the U.S., five hours behind y'all, I challenge you and TFE to a 'Who can chat on Facebook the longest' challenge. Let's see, when it's ll p.m. here, it's 4 a.m. there, right? You guys would probably outlast me. ;)

A deft and economical rhyme, kind of AA Milne - ish in its clever simplicity.

Karen said...

I'm the opposite - can't stay asleep and have to make myself stay in bed. I wish it were otherwise.

Rachel Fox said...

Oo I never stay on FB too long, Jeanne I. That way madness lies...

Thanks Peter. Muchly.

And can you believe, Karen, that after all this talk of sleep I woke last night and was awake for HOURS! Stupid brain...

Then/Again works as a rhyme in Midlands here. You pome could have been written for me. The whole day needs moving round by several hours so my 'morning' comes at about 11:00 a.m. If only...

Rachel Fox said...

Sounds like you need this song, Argent.

A fellow night owl. I am at my best when the clock is approaching mid-night.

I shall be using your big brain excuse myself.

Lovely poem :)
