Madame, I think your whale needs dusting... another week, another Poetry Bus

So, politics here is not good news (is it ever?). We will be cut, cut and cut again and in many quarters there is that unavoidable sense of doom I remember so well from the last time (ah, the Tories...high priests and priestesses of the religion Do-as-we-say-not-as-we-do...).

This isn't a political post though...as much as anything because I'm still in holiday-mode. Here is another photo from our London trip (from the Natural History Museum). Other photos are here and here.

As for the Poetry Bus, this week it is driven by Argent and has the subject 'meetings' (task is here). My poem ticket is below and although it's written in the first person it's really not much about me at all (just in case you were wondering). I'm just a bit of a first person voice kind of a writer I guess... sometimes it's plain old me but sometimes it absolutely is not!

Finally

This is the meeting where I will ask you all those questions
Where I will see your face again after so much time
And it will be a hard sea of answers

This is the time that I thought might never come
One more chance to hold you
And I don't even mind if your heart's not in it

This is the place we all try to imagine
Last-chance saloon, grabbed set of moments
And it is hard to be here but here we are all the same

The bleak resignation of this comes across powerfully. A chilling evocation of that most 'here' of moments.

Thanks Dick. It is 'about' something very specific but I'll keep that to myself (for now anyway) and see what the responses and reactions are first!

Cut, cut, and cut again, until there is little left. The Arts, and the poorest in society, coming off badly, as usual. Very reminiscent of the Thatcher years, I agree. (How come we're still building aircraft carriers for mothballed harriers? Oh, I mustn't get going, bad for my blood pressure...)

Love the poem, btw.

Loved "last chance saloon".

Sort of how I feel about politicians going towards our Nov. 2nd election. :)

Politics is everywhere!

I think I know what is.But despite, that, or because of it, I also know it's a good poem.

And in a weird kind of way strangely similar to mine. Great minds!?

I have this vision of a wake - but maybe it's just a relationship wake... It left me feeling kind of sad for the person grasping for something they already know they won't get.

Your poem feels very powerful, and also kind of held-back, which adds to the feeling.

I've enjoyed visiting your blog and website again after many months away!

I like the poem, it's dark and sad but gently handled.

This is so simple yet so so heart wrenching
You have capatured that inexplixable depth and weight of past present and future of death and grief

Rachel Fox said...

Well, yes, there is a death element to it...

Last-chance saloon -- the place we want to be and dread. Very good poem.

Thanks Karen.

I think everyone else has said what I want to say. Bleak, yes, resigned, yes and poignant. Really liked the spareness of it.

Beautifully heartbreaking, Rachel. Sometimes the best poems/songs are those that, while they be written about a specific "something," connect with individuals where they are, perhaps reminding them of "somethings" past...or future. Well done!

Glad you're liking it. It is more of the imagination than some of my other poems - a mixture really of some very real circumstances and some completely imaginary ones.

At least you leave us with the possibility of a chance, even if it is the last one. Sometimes hearts need hope...

Rachel Fox said...

Oh I'm all about the hope... for example see this old poem back here.

Hi Rachel,
I think you should develop this one as it has the potential to be something special. Not sure about 'Last chance saloon' but the rest of it is pretty damn intriguing...

We all have those wished for second chance meetings. Yours expresses the thoughts perfectly!

Gosh, that's gulpingly terrific Rachel. And it is hard to be here but here we are all the same

Rachel Fox said...

Thanks all - especially for that response, EW.
