Saving music

There's been a lot of talk about that TV programme 'X Factor' this Xmas (what with the campaign to beat it to number one and all). I've only ever watched 'X FActor' once (at someone else's house) but that...was enough. A couple of years ago I wrote a very short poem about its main man. It's in the book (p14) but today that little poem is up at Ink, Sweat and Tears (here). Obviously for full effect you should sing the poem to the tune of the New Seekers hit from 1971 (which rather hilariously started off as a Coca Cola jingle...who said shameless commercialism is new?). And while we're on the subject here are the New Seekers. I loved this song when I was 4...still like it today really. No-one ever said things were simple.

I love that song Rachel - "in perfect harmony" hardly likely when one considers the recent Copenhagen summit.
As for X Factor I have never seen it - what I hate most about TV is the celebrity cult thing - as though everyone has to be famous for fifteen minutes.
A Very Happy New Year to you All - and hugs for small girl and licks from Tess to Zoe.

Thanks for those good wishes, Weaver. And I hope everyone else will work out that the licks are from dog to dog!

IS and T, again? Well done Rachel! There are too mant things to list as to why I hate X factor but one of them is the incessant noise and shouting and explosions.Okay that's three but there roughly the same thing.

I haven't watched it enough to hate it, TFE, but whenever I have seen clips of that Cowell person I just can't understand why anyone would want to watch him regularly (no matter how good or bad the singing). Plus it does seem to be karaoke on TV and whilst I don't mind the odd bit of karaoke I couldn't get excited about watching it every Saturday night.

I'm a shameless fan of 'X-Factor' and find in a lot of the shriller criticism levelled against it a high degree of unreflecting snobbishness. I'm certainly not committed enough to my enjoyment of it to want to invite anyone taking noisy exception to it to step outside, but it would be good to hear some measured, reasoned argument. For starters, when it comes to unthinking blather Sting's recent attack matches effortlessly some of Cowell's more maladroit pronouncements.

Sorry, Rachel: I loved the little verse!

Good to have some dissent Dick! Though I'd quite like to know what you do enjoy about it...

Of course Mum, Girl and I watch Strictly Come Dancing so we are not in any position to be snobbish! Strictly and XF are both mainly panto/family TV and they have much in common I would admit. I don't dislike the whole X programme but I do dislike Cowell's TV persona, the so regular ad breaks, the bland nature of a lot of the music...I could go on. Have you really heard much music on it, Dick, that you have liked listening to? I've seen some great waltzes on our trash of choice.
