A Wednesday song - back to clouds

Maybe I'll post a song every day for the rest of the week (I did used to be a DJ you know - maybe this is just a different outlet for that occupation). Today's song is one that was mentioned in the comments last week when we were talking about clouds. It is sung here by one of English folk's finest singers June Tabor. Tabor isn't one of the young, new singers of the latest folk invasion (and boy, are there a lot of them!). Instead she is very much old guard but unlike some of the latter (with their wobbly, for me, almost painful voices) Tabor has a beautiful, deep, strong voice with a wide range. She's really something special (though I suspect she'd hate to read that...I get the impression she's all about the music and the tradition and not particularly self-interested). I've yet to see her live (details of current tour dates and so on are here) but I own a couple of her cds and they are all fantastic. Anyway, see what you think of this:

The song was written by Bill Caddick (his website is here).

Now, what song for tomorrow?

Ah! I'm no folk fan, but that's far more like it. Wonderful voice.

Folk is such a huge genre...there's plenty I don't like in it but lots and lots that I do. I only really started listening to it (knowingly) this decade and I've already found so much that is fantastic...and there's lots more to discover yet.

You'll be a folk fan yet! At least a part-timer.

Ah! Curse you, Red Fox. I've been whistling this for an hour now!

Welcome to folk, little doggy. There's no going back.

I should have said that it was Solitary Walker who mentioned this song last week. He is a man of taste.

A beautiful voice and a marvellous discovery for me at least. I am not au fait with the English folk scene at all unfortunately and that is one area I would like to explore further. Any suggestions will be very welcome.

Greetings from London.

As I say it's all relatively new to me too. You could start by listening to the folk show on BBC Radio 2 - every Weds at 7pm, presented by Mike Harding. It's only an hour and he plays a good range of music (you can get it on listen again).
Then look around for a folk club - I don't know anything about them in London but magazines and sites will have all the details. A quick search throws up this one in Walthamstow

They had Bill Caddick earlier this month (connection to post!) and Pete Morton (coming up on 1st Nov) - we saw him a couple of years ago he's really good. Especially having read your post about poet-singers...Morton is very much that. Get thee to the folk club, Cubano!

I adore JT. As you know.

A man of taste, eh? Oh dear. Do you know I'm currently driving a Ford Mondeo, like brown sauce on my bacon and egg butties, sometimes eat cold baked beans out of the can, watch 'Come Dine With Me' with guilty pleasure and would rather stick Status Quo into the CD player than Radiohead?

What will you think of me now? ;)

Nice rich voice. So often for me folk singers have nasal voices. But this lady is superb.

SW - I'm with you on the cold baked beans (yummy!)..not so sure about the Status Quo. Still, we're all allowed a couple of pass cards. I've not watched the dining programme. I like food on plates rather than on TV on the whole.

Weaver - yes her voice is marvellous and she's a great performer too (from what I've seen on TV). I know what you mean...there are certain folk voices that I don't enjoy listening to at all...Tabor's is certainly not one of those.

As for your car, SW, only tedious focus group moderators and wankers judge a person by their car.

p.s. I have been a focus group moderator (in a previous life). I tried my best not to be a tedious one.

I'm suspect you were the least tedious fgm ever, Rachel. In fact I'm convinced of it!

The Mondeo's not mine. It came with the job. My own Porsche 911 was written off avoiding a pigeon in the road months ago. (Only joking. About the Porsche. And the pigeon. Cars actually bore me stiff. I'm not in the least bit interested in them.)

Yes, of course - judging anyone by the car they drive is quite ridiculous!
