It's going to take me ages to write up my StAnza 09 story (so much to listen to and to think about, so many folk to meet and get to know better, so many fashion crimes in one small town...). In the meantime please enjoy this from Paul Weller in possibly his strangest phase - the Style Council (unsurprisingly, perhaps, my favourite Weller age). This song is playing loud in our house this morning because it's Mother's Day (so I get to skive off everything...even more than usual) and because we picked up a Style Council CD compilation in St.Andrews' Oxfam in Saturday (for me...I've got one on vinyl that I never remember to play...Mark prefers Dadrock-acoustic-Weller...Small Girl likes the Jam). But never mind all that...for now lets jump about and generally party like it's 1985...

I really liked Style Council too, strangely enough...
Thanks for that clip, Rachel. Now I finally know what look my ex was going for in the 80s. All the time I was thinking it was Andy Taylor in Duran Duran and here it was Paul Weller he was emulating.
I'm with Small Girl - I loved the Jam.
Kat
The Style Council was a bit of an odd pit stop for Weller, when you look at what he did before and after. Good tunes though, that's for sure.
Nice too meet you at StAnza Rachel! I thought I'd bump into you again at some point. I've not long returned to the Other End of Fife, tired from the late nights and morning masterclasses.
Maybe we are twins separated at birth, Juliet! I don't think I've ever seen a photo of you now I come to think of it...it's all rabbit photos on your blog!
Kat - I do like the Jam too...certainly the big tuney ones (less so the punky ones probably). Small Girl is very keen on 'a Town Called Malice'...and who wouldn't be - what a song. As for haircuts...I realised watching this clip that at several points in the 1980s I actually looked like Paul Weller in this phase. I have the same big nose, pointy face and was that thin back then. I also had that big sloppy flick in the hair at least twice (once in about 1981 and then again about 1988). Maybe I'll dig out a photo or two! Or maybe not...
Yes, Ken and we like a tune don't we! I seem to have gone exclamation mark crazy in this comment - sorry about that. It's been a long weekend.
And Ross - yes hello to you too. Sorry to have yelled at you across the poets' market! I think I need to go to poetry obedience classes...or just life obedience classes...

Small Girl all the way! Altogether now:
"Du nu nu nu NU nu nu nu
Du nu nu nu NU nu nu nu
Eton Rifles, Eton Rifles!"
My brother, before he joined the army (which he leaves this Friday, by-the-by) had lots of Jam albums. He also had a Jam CD which I borrowed once and it actually had jam on it... he refused to tell me why. Hmmm.... :/
The poets market? Poets for sale? Can I have one for my mantlepice? :)
You're up late! No work tomorrow?
I don't really like 'Eton Rifles'...not especially anyway. I liked 'Start' and 'That's Entertainment' and a few others ('Town called malice' again).
I had a brother in the army too. He left it quite a while ago.
Next year you can come and buy your own poet!

I have Style Council LP languishing in my "vynyl" collection somewhere... I now feel moved to dig it out! :)
Yes, Style Council is one that I can enjoy. Thanks for posting .
Again, I'm with Small Girl- I love "A Town Called Malice". You would often find me pogo-ing/slamming/ska-kicking my heart out on a dance-floor to that one!
My sister (who is 6ft. tall to my 5'4") used to have the short sides and long flip-bang over one eye. She looked like she could have stood in for a member of Big Country.
Rachel, do you remember "Tenpole Tudor"?
Kat
I remember the name, Kat, and the outfits but not the song.
We've just watched 'Billy Elliot' again hence the 'Malice' link really (how many tears did I shed??). It's a 15 certificate so far too old for SG really but at least she now knows lots about the miners' strike (plus lots of swearwords she'd never heard before). Oh well, she's got to learn them some time...they're only words...

Oh yes... work today... but I work on a strict 7 hour sleep pattern: if I have to get up at 7:15, I'm allowed to be awake til 00:15 (The only problem is it takes me 15 mins to get to sleep...)
I don;t know hy Eton Rifles came to mind first... it should have been Going Underground.
And the idea of buying a poet makes me think of another of my wee comic strips.
If I do go, can I have a cute, uber-talented one? Short red hair would be a good option as well... or is it not that kind of market? ;)
Oh yes, I like the underground one too.
As for the market...you'll just have to go yourself next year and see! Sounds like you have something particular in mind...
