Hardcore folk

I've not been able to be online so much recently but I get the feeling it's quieter than usual just now, isn't it? Some people have been affected by the whole no-fly zone business (relatives stranded around the globe...), others have lost the use of their computers (various reasons including the big McAfee disaster – read here) and some of us...well...we've been doing a lot of laundry (see previous posts for backstory).

Because of all the life going on I've had no time to read (or even think really) this week...but I did do some ironing just now and listened to an English folk CD I quite like by Ed, Will and Ginger (read about them here – they walk around, they busk, they walk around some more...). Here's a little film to give you a flavour of their sound (though it only features two of them). They are fairly hardcore folk.

Speaking of 'hardcore' I had a bit of a misunderstanding with that word last week...someone thought I was being rude or critical when I used it and I really wasn't. To an old raver like me 'hardcore' is more compliment than negative critique. And just thinking about it makes me feel like posting an old rave number too...just for contrast. It's not particularly hardcore...but it has it in the name.

And next week's Poetry Bus with the Watercats wants sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. Plenty in the back catalogue...see you then.

Tis a bit quiet alright, think nicer weather tempts people away and out of doors a bit too...
yes monday looks like a doozie of a challenge doesn't it?

what a nice thing. i feel rather enthused. that singing tho, that's just the sort of folk music i don't like. a great thing to do tho.

The singing goes with their whole project though...traditions, low tech...and no, it's not my favourite style in some ways either but they've won me round with their devotion to what they do. I've always loved buskers too...even the crappest ones.

Do hope things are getting better for you all the time Rachel. How is your mother?

For now her health is better - stable at least. She's quite fed up with it all of course - used to being active and independent...

A contrast, alright. And folk's not my thing, but I was rather charmed, in a non-patronising way.

Sex and drugs and rock and roll. Oh Lord, where to begin...?

Hoping for a better week for you, and my regards to Mum.

There is something about young men with curly hair that makes me care not one jot what they do...

Hope things aren't too disturbing for you, X

Eryl! Weren't you endeared by their Lincoln Green?

Rachel Fox said...

I thought it meant she liked them. I have a little girl with very curly hair so I am very biased in favour of curls.

Interesting. I didn't see the ambiguity in the comment at all. Am I a straight supremacist?

I suppose I finished her sentence with "but I still like them" or something like that. Knowing how lovely the curls in this house are I just can't understand how anyone would do anything but love them! Looking at our girl's natural ringlets sometimes they almost make me believe in a divine power (but 'almost' is of course the key word here...they are just curls).

Not written anything because of the stress. Now that Jane's home - 8 days late - she's struggling with our holiday company and the insurers. A different kind of stress. Have realised I could never live alone, so that's one good thing to have come out of the volcano.

It's good you've got her back, Colin.

I did mean I like them, curls are the best and I envy anyone who has them. Bob has wild curls so any young men with curly hair instantly bring out my maternal instincts. I can see though, why T thought I meant the opposite: 'care not one jot' does sound rather dismissive but I actually meant whatever they do is fine by me.

Ah ha, my first instinct was right! Good.

I smiled at what you do whilst ironing. I usually watch telly, footie or baseball. But yesterday I caught up with both Never Mind the Buzzzcocks and Hava I Got News For You. Was in stitches the whole time. The former had Germaine Greer as one of the guests and Simon is back. And is he back!

Sorry, I digress. Your definition of hardcore caught my eye because I was never a raver so I just learnt something new tonight. Many thanks.

I've only watched Buzzcocks once or twice with Simon A but you're right - he is good. It's got to the point where I hardly know any of the new bands they're talking about...
