Monday poem? Well, it's a poem and it is Monday...

Here's something we recorded earlier. In fact it was recorded at the National Poetry Day Plus One event in Montrose last month. I wasn't on the bill as such but I was compering/hosting and I did a poem in between each of the other acts on the bill. At the beginning of the second half I did this poem to warm the audience back up after the break (or something...really I just like doing it). There is a bit of a ramble at the beginning but it all helps set the scene.

Quite a change from last Monday's poem, don't you think?

Audience of two here at mine, and we joined in. That was a blast! A Greek un-Tragedy.

Yes, I forgot to add that - join in at home if you can!
But you did anyway.

Nice one, Rachel!

Thanks NanU. I like to keep it varied.

Nice one, you're so good at working the crowd!

It partly depends on the crowd, Sorlil...this was a very good-natured crowd having a really good evening out (everyone sang and read and engaged so well with the audience).

I also read my November poem (posted that last year - here) and two others - 'the mystery retained' (in my book and here) and 'what is it all for' (see here).

I decided to read poems about poetry/writing which I don't often do. I figured National Poetry Day was a good excuse.

Brava! Rachel, really nice to be able to see that...the joys of youtube.

Yes, I'm not the only one playing on youtube today though (am I? TFE...).

I sometimes feel it's a bit risky putting a poem like this online. It won't help any being-taken-seriously-as-a-poet ambitions I might harbour. But then I do it anyway. Because I hate limitations!

Exits in silver cape and flounce singing 'I am what I am...'

And we like you just the way you Is.
Is that a real live audience like living breathing people that y ou are so capably addressing? Never mind Halloween, now that's scary!Great Job though, you had them in the palm of your hand!I joined in too, great fun.

No it's weird...talking to a big crowd of people is one of the few things I'm not fearty about! Just don't ask me to drive them all home...

Tess barked, so she joined in too! I think we have all got into the Monday poetry rut - as someone said on my blog today - the poetry bus is still continuing in its disassociated parts. Love to small girl.

Yes, there's no stopping us now...

Well, it sure as hell beats yet another discordant collaborative version of 'The Jug of Punch' or 'The Irish Rover'! Great stuff and good to see and hear you reading.

This was brill! It makes you so real, as if I doubted that! Well done for getting people involved in poetry!

I like this so much more than last Monday! [With apologies to TFE]. And yes, I did join in. :)

You do well with crowds...I was watching the folks in the front as their smiles broadened.

More like this clip, please. :)

Thanks y'all. Yes, getting people involved with it...that was one of the things on my mind. I thought it might be fun to try it...and so far I think audiences have enjoyed taking part. I am very interested in the whole concept of an audience...hence my whole crowd-pleasers thing on the website and beyond.

You have a lovely way with the crowd - nice bit of banter.

Rachel Fox said...

Thanks Niamh. It's always easier when the crowd is friendly, though, isn't it?

Hee hee- I really liked this, Rachel! You have such a lovely speaking voice, warm and friendly! I found myself joining in too!

Thanks RB. I was in a very good mood that night (people came! people enjoyed it!) so I guess that came through.

Good one. It sounds light, but it keeps you thinking.

Looks like there's a nice ambience there. We could do with something like that round here.

Rachel Fox said...

Thanks Dominic...I think that's my writing all over...sounds light but...well, you never know.

As for the event - if I can organise something like that then I'm sure you can too. Book Hugh (Shug) McMillan and you can't go wrong really. I don't think I've ever seen a better performer. Good writer too. And criminally undervalued in Scotland (maybe it's up to the English to champion him...).
