Foot or face?

In the past couple of months I have been wasting, er, I mean spending some time over on facebook here and there. I didn't really mean to...it just happened (though I assure you I have not been getting involved with online mafia games or sending hugs or any of that nonsense). One thing I have not put on facebook though (until now) is my face (or a photo of said face). Just the fact that it's called 'facebook' made me almost allergic to putting my face on it somehow and so instead I went for feet...these feet from a few years ago (they are mine):

And thinking about this in turn reminds me of a poem by our lord Hugh McMillan (recorded back at the Forest place in Edinburgh in 2008):

Is he not the man?

But back to me...yesterday I decided to break all tradition (OK...slight exaggeration for dramatic effect) and post a face photo on facebook. I think maybe that at nearly 43 it is time to look myself in the somewhat tired face and see what's going on there. Here I am (brace yourselves):

This was taken last summer (back here in fact) and no, I don't have that tan anymore. Anyone remember summer?

It's the eyes you need to look at, just the eyes and there's still some sparkle there I see.

Why thank-you Jim. My eyes are green but they don't look very green in this pic. It was the end of a holiday...I'm weary but happy (mostly because I survived the 2 day bit in DisneyParis without spontaneously combusting or anything).

He is great, our Shug. Highly recommended. There are two other videos of him on my youtube channel thing.

She wrote (using impeccable technical language...er, not). Some feminist...if it wasn't for Mark I'd be scraping poems onto the ground with sticks.

Oh, I think you're just lovely- just the sort of person I'd love to meet for coffee!

Can you tell by looking? Maybe you can...
Can we have decaf though, RB, or hot chocolate (too much caffeine makes me crazy and grumpy...and I'm fairly crazy to start with).

It's a lovely pic Rachel, I've never been brave enough to put a close up of myself on line...
When I'm 60 I'll put a pic of myself at 30 up, and I'll think I look lovelee

Is it brave? There are lots of horrible much-less-lovely pics that I could have chosen (ones that show much more fat and wrinkle and all the other stuff...). All the ones where I'm looking the wrong way or am sitting next to someone younger and lovelier...(I cut her out of this one...I don't post child pics very much...no real reason...I know others do).

I wrote about photos back here (author photos in particular). On the whole I don't show or look at many photos of myself. And I'm not a big mirror junkie either. Maybe this year's resolution is to face up to myself (quite literally warts and all). Maybe. Till I run away.

its nice to see your face on Facebook though I like the photos that aren't faces, your feet were quite cool...

Yes...I might be back to the feet yet! Or something else...down into my ear or something.

Summer goes away so quickly. The sun is a trespasser, yet we all must serve it.

t says i'm neglecting the fact we had home made cookies made by your own fair hands. she also asked if your picture was of you in your writing house. in a laura ashley dress. with a ribbon in your hair.

because that's how we think of you. yes it is! lol

Hello Marvin.

Swiss...I have never written in that building! Not a word! It is just a big Wendy house (worked out cheaper than buying one of the ones specially made for kids). I did help put it up though. Well, I held things in place while Mark did all the work. Story of our lives.

That photo was taken as we were sitting outside a restaurant in Epernay in France (last night of our holiday in July 09). It had been a very hot day (and indeed a long day's travelling back north). What would we give now for a hot day!

And I have never, ever worn a Laura Ashley dress!

I love that Shug poem. :)

And yours tis a lovely face...and you get big points for sharing it.

I hate photos of me past the age of about 12...my serious green eyes only seem more serious. Family trait, lent by my maternal grandfather. He could smile all day long and yet his eyes were serious. When I met his sister for the first time I was already in my late 20s and the first thing she said was, "You have his eyes!"

One of these days.....maybe Kim Ayres can do something with my face. Then again, I got some interesting software for Christmas that lets you morph faces...need to go learn how to use it! ;0

Thanks Hope. You are a gentle reassuring voice as ever! And I don't know what you face looks like but I do love your voice...I sometimes go back and listen to those poetry readings you did just to hear how fantastic it sounds (here).

Hi Rachel, yay! for photo, like the mid/post-holiday look - tired but happy (Famous Five line, I think ; )) Funny thing, before book came out and it got slapped on my profile, my photo was mid/post-holiday too...must dig it out or get new mid-post-holiday look out...think they capture us as is... : )
Thanks for poet audio below...have put time aside this after-noon for indulgence...
Also nice summing up of Jan. resolutions in poem...I like new beginnings but not when rammed down throat by media as is happening now...!

Yes, and it's so nice to think about warm holidays now (for those of us in the chill anyway!). I've only ever had a sun break in winter once (to Canaries as it happens...for my 30th...bit of a disaster...fell out with another friend...too much drink...). It's nice to dream about it though.

That is, it's nice to dream about warmth...not drinking too much and falling out with friends (though she drank far more than me, I should point out).
